Glendora, California - GERTRUDE OLIVEIRA MARCIEL

December 31, 1929 - January 15, 2026

Gertrude Teresa Oliveira Marciel, 96, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, in the care of Glendora Hospice Care Home in Glendora, California. Gertrude was born in Hana on December 31, 1929, and was the 13th of 13 children born to Marianna and Manual Oliveira of Nahiku, Maui. Gertrude was raised by her parents on the family farm in Nahiku and went to Hana School. She graduated from Hana school, and at the age of 19, she married Lawrence Marciel. A few years later, she flew to Washington D.C. with two of her four children, who were born in Hana, to be united with her husband who had secured a job at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Gertrude was a devout Catholic who was dedicated to spending time cultivating a relationship with Jesus Christ. She spent many hours reading, praying, composing prayers and poems dedicated to her love of Jesus. She also loved flowers and made jewelry, including rosaries and bracelets; which she continued doing right up to the age of 95. She was a wonderful mother with a beautiful soul and will be greatly missed. She is predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Marciel, her four brothers, Lawrence, Justin, August, Frank, and her 8 sisters, Helen, Veronica, Agnes, Mary, Evan, Joaquina, Catherine, and Matilda. She leaves behind her three daughters, Lydia, Marian, Colette and one son, Lawrence Marciel Jr. and her 11 grandchildren, 17 great-children and 1 great-great grandchild.

The family would like to thank all who supported us during this journey, with special recognition to the Thomas and Phyllis Duarte family of Iao Valley and Marilyn Fernandez family of Kula.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku. Visitation at 9:00am; Eulogy at 10:30am and Mass at 11:00am. Burial at Makawao Veteran's Cemetery at 1:00pm, followed by a luncheon at the Paia Community Center.
