Harlan Riley Hughes Obituary

Kula, HI - The Maui community lost one of its singular citizens with the passing of Harlan Riley Hughes on September 13, 2025, at his home in Kula, Maui. He was 81. His mother Lottie (Hoffman) Hughes was also a long-time Maui resident.

A memorial service at a private residence is planned for October 27.

He is survived by his wife Judy Anderson, daughter Ginger Lei Kinney (Ben Kinney), grandchildren Max, Laura-Lei, and Caroline Kinney, great-grandson Kainalu Cummings, sister Loretta Hughes, and niece Bonnie McKee, all of Maui, as well as sisters Betty King and Patricia Dowell, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Moving from California to Hawaii in 1967, his professional career was centered mostly in the Food & Beverage industry with special focus on wine: serving (sommelier), selling wholesale and retail (Connoisseur Food & Wine store).

After retirement, he focused on community service, helping to organize many fund raisers for Maui non-profits. He lived a pono life and will be missed.
