Celebrating the Life of Motoko Horie Caldwell

We joyfully celebrate the extraordinary life of Motoko Horie Caldwell—vivacious, witty, radiant, and adored by all who knew her. A tireless advocate for peace and unity, she passed away with joy and radiance on March 29, 2025, in Maui, surrounded by her cherished family. Her passing was marked not by sorrow, but by a sense of fulfillment and light.

Born in 1935 in Kyushu, Japan, Motoko lived through the horrors of World War II, an experience that awakened in her a profound yearning for peace. This yearning ultimately led her to the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh, which became the guiding light of her life. Longtime resident of Wailuku and devoted member of the Maui Bahá'í community, she exemplified a life of service, joy and steadfast faith.

Motoko's unwavering commitment to the principles of unity, mentoring and lifelong learning shone brightly. She translated over 20 Bahá'í books into Japanese, opening spiritual doors for countless others. She also facilitated inclusive study circles, welcoming people of all backgrounds and beliefs to explore spiritual truths and work together toward a more peaceful world.

In the final stages of a long and debilitating illness, with labored breaths, her spirit remained unshakable. In her last message to one of her study groups, she shared:"I am happy. Please don't be sad - it will affect my soul if you are sad. I want you to be happy. I will see you when you graduate; we will have a study circle. This is finally happening to me. Death is a messenger of joy, and I am enjoying every minute. So be really happy. Thank you for your friendship of many years.

"Motoko is survived by her two beloved daughters, her loving stepchildren, and her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her legacy of joy, faith, and peace will continue to inspire all who had the blessing of knowing her.

Burial will take place at Maui Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, April 8 in Makawao promptly at 10:30 AM followed by a celebration of her life at the Makawao Bahá'í Center at 3574 Kekahi Pl. All are warmly welcome.
