Kahului, HI - Toshiko Cindy Nishihara, 88, of Kahului, Maui, passed away on May 26, 2026. Born in Okinawa, she later made her home on Maui, where she became a vibrant, beloved fixture of the community. She is remembered for her warm heart, legendary Okinawan cooking, and deep love for her friends and family.

Born and raised in Okinawa, Toshiko Nishihara brought her island spirit to the United States in her late twenties. Shortly after arriving, she built a beautiful life on Maui, where she married Kamesuke Nishihara.

Known for her vibrant social nature, she was a dedicated and active member of the Maui Okinawan community. She devoted countless hours to cultural events and gatherings, always eager to share her heritage. Her presence brought joy to any room, whether she was mingling with friends or enthusiastically sitting down for a lively round of cards.

Toshiko was a gifted cook. She was famous for her incredible Okinawan food and traditional treats. From mastering perfect andagi (Okinawan doughnuts) to preparing savory Okinawan soba and champuru, her cooking was the heart of every family gathering and many community celebrations. She showed her love through her food, always ensuring everyone around her was well-fed and happy.

A celebration of her life and legacy will be held on May 30, 2026 at the Kahului Jodo Mission at 11 am. All who knew and loved her are warmly invited to attend and share their favorite memories of her.
